Spring Activties
Our residents, families and staff are enjoying a very busy Spring filled with entertainment and activities. In March, of course, we celbrated St. Patrick's Day with a corned beef and cabbage dinner and a Celtic entertainer. And Mardi Gras featured a Louisiana style Jambalaya dinner. The Spring Fling Party in our Memory Care Residence was a fun event. And all residents and staff wore "the colors" to celebrate our Red Sox opening day. Tables were decorated with baseballs and Crackerjacks and everyone gathered to watch the game later in the day. Go Sox.
Special April bus trips were to The Bass Pro Shops where residents marveled at the indoor waterfall and aquarium and to the Fatima Shrine in Holliston. This trip was especially fun since one of our residents helped build the outdoor shrine. On April 30th don't miss the Whitcomb House fashion show where staff and residents will model their favorites spring and summer outfits.
We are pleased to announce that since the opening in mid-June of 2006 of a new 35,000 sq. ft. building extention 98% of all units are occupied. Residents are very happy with the new residence. The design meets or exceeds most of our stated project goals. Please return to the home page and click on the virtual tour for a photo tour.
Before the start of the project, we defined goals to guide our design. We have:
-
Added more units to meet current demand for assisted living in the area.
-
Connected our two separate residences for improved operational efficiencies.
-
Designed a flexible building whose use can be adapted to our residents' needs.
-
Enhanced and expand the common living areas for our residents' comfort.
-
Improved the site to create more opportunity for outside exercise on our six-acre campus.
-
And most important, maintained our successful philosophy of "small works best" as we grow in size.
Architect Steve MacKenzie of MacKenzie and Associates of Burlington, Vermont was hired to create the design. He has extensive experience designing assisted living residences. We spent many hours with Steve brainstorming and adapting our design to meet our goals. We often cite research that concludes that small communities work best because they allow for variety and stimulation without being overwhelming or too large to emotionally handle. Smaller communities also provide many daily interactions between residents and staff. This allows staff to be sensitive to residents' needs or any gradual changes. Therefore, our main challenge was determining how to grow while remaining "small." To meet this goal, Steve suggested the use of discrete neighborhoods comprised of studio units and common living spaces such as country kitchens and dining/living areas. The new unified residence is comprised of four neighborhoods offering two assisted living options. Some neighborhoods accommodate elders needing our assisted living services and some neighborhoods are secured to accommodate our memory care assisted living program. The new main level has additional common spaces including a library, living room, dining room and the All Day Café. Residents have the flexibility and choice of using the common areas in their neighborhood or using the amenities on the main floor level.
The interior of the residence is designed by Jeanne Lawrence of Lawrence Interiors, Ltd. Jeanne specializes in interior design for county inns. Among her many successful projects is the Woodstock Inn in Woodstock, Vermont. We often state that while many assisted living residences have the look of a nice hotel, Whitcomb House has the feel and comfort of a country inn. So Jeanne is a great fit for us. In communicating our ideas to Jeanne, we also incorporated our previous experience with Joanne Koenig-Coste, M.Ed., one of the nation's leading experts on the creation of residential care for people with memory disorders. State of the art design utilizes color, lighting and layout concepts to enhance the mood and functioning of memory impaired people while maintaining their safety. Joanne's concepts work well for all elders. You can read more about this on the web site by going to Memory Care Program - The Residence.
